words of the wise.

In Proverbs (the book of wisdom), page after page, King Solomon writes the importance of listening and hearing the words of the wise. He writes that we become wise when our ears are open to those who once walked where we now tread. Proverbs 2:1-2 "My son (daughter) if you receive my words and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding.. then you will understand.."

I recently had a patient that I wish everyone had the opportunity to meet! (I'm going to be super vague because I don't want to break any HIPPA violations..=) ) My sweet patient is nearly a century old and still going strong!! One random day, as I was examining her, I asked her if she had any stories to share from the almost 100 years that she's lived on this green earth. Any advice to give to an amateur at life, as I. And she looked at me with glistening eyes that held a century worth of observations, and told me that the sweetest thing in her life was to have walked with Jesus all the days of her life. (that is almost word to word what she said).  She told me that Jesus has satisfied her every need.  Jesus was with her through every trouble... Jesus was the sweet things in her life. She didn't tell me that she had once known, loved, and lived with prince charming. She didn't put emphasis on her grand wedding. She didn't disclose on her career. Her beautiful children and grandchildren. She didn't tell me of her prized possessions, silverware from France or fancy dresses she had hanging in her closet. She didn't tell me of her great adventures to distant lands. She told me simply the one thing worth telling me -- it is sweet to walk with Jesus.

I suppose after living ten decades, pretty things grow ugly. Silverware rust. Great loves dissolve. Best friends leave. Fancy things break. But Jesus Christ is always with us. His Word does not rust with age. His love does not dissolve. He will never leave -- No, not through the good. Not in the bad. Not even in the ugly will He walk away from us.  Jesus Christ gave us a promise that we can bank on, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Mat 28:20).

Wisdom is this, according to the great and wise King Solomon " the fear of the Lord (respecting and worshiping God) is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction".  I want to be wise, not foolish. And I long to answer the question, as my patient answered, one day. Old, wrinkled. I want to say, it has been sweet to walk with Jesus.

Dear Jesus, I want to walk closer to you. The things that I value the most. The people I love the most will one day be..gone. But I know that You will never leave me nor forsake me. Help me to walk with You daily. to love You daily. To listen and value You, daily. SO that I can look back on my life, however short or long and say it has been so sweet to walk with my Jesus, my Lord, my Love, my Friend all the days on my life.  Amen.

  1. Well said, my friend! And with such wisdom, too!! :D
Such a blessing to be reminded that the love Christ has for us is everlasting & our walk with Him is the sweetest thing we have. So thank you for reminding us to be grateful for the love & sacrifice that God so generously showers us with.
    Be blessed!
